SAN MARCOS, Nov. 10, 2017 – Celebrate and honor those who have served our country at the family friendly Veterans Day Parade winding through downtown San Marcos.

Prior to the parade starting at 10 a.m. this Saturday, the city of San Marcos will offer a free breakfast on the County Courthouse lawn at 8:30 a.m. and live entertainment. The two-hour parade will include local veterans’ groups, military organizations, public officials and other members of the community.

Leading up to the parade will be the Kiwanis Club Bicycle Brigade where children can decorate their bicycles in patriotic colors for all to see. San Marcos will also be hosting a Farmers Market on San Antonio Street on south side of the courthouse featuring the community’s crafts and fresh produce for sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Veterans Day dates back to Nov. 11, 1919 as the first anniversary of the end of World War I and originated as “Armistice Day.” This day became a national holiday in 1938 to pay tribute to all Americans- alive or not- that served for our country in the United States Armed Forces honorably during war or peacetime.

Texas State University will hold its annual Veterans Day Commemoration this Monday at 10:50 a.m. in the Quad near the Fighting Stallions statue. Keynote speaker Lt. Col. Manuel F. Saenz will be followed by Denise M. Trauth and Student Foundation leaders. The Bobcat Marching Band will perform and the ROTC detachments will post and retire the colors. During the program, the Commemorative Air Force will conduct a flyover. Following the program, a reception will be held in the LBJSC room 3-13.1.

The City of San Marcos Park and Recreation helps organize outdoor activities and resources for everyone in the city. They preserve the community’s art and landmarks such as the Veterans Memorial located on the corner of Hopkins Street and Riverside Drive.
