Clown robs student on campus

Updated: Jan 25, 2020

SAN MARCOS- Texas State police received reports of a student who was robbed of her backpack and its contents by a man dressed as a clown on a bicycle Tuesday evening.

Police received a 911 call from Texas State sophomore, Estella Garza, 20, of El Paso, who was walking through the Alkek Parking Garagealone at 8:13 p.m. As her back was turned, a man dressed as a clown rode up behind her on a bicycle and grabbed her backpack and its contents totaling $432 of personal items.

“…all of a sudden I saw this blur of motion and this weird guy dressed as a clown come out of nowhere,” Garza said. “He rode up, grabbed my backpack and just sort of spun me around and took off. I went flying.”

Garza descripted the subject as a tall, thin, man with an athletic build wearing a green wig and black and white striped pants. He is believed to be involved in the other four-reported robberies this semester.

According to police, no arrests have been made, however they have issued a timely warning alert to campus and are on the look out for the thief.

I am forming a task force to address this problem,” said University Police Chief Jose L. Bañales. “We will have additional police officers patrolling campus in areas that may be vulnerable to this type of activity.”

Police advise students to exercise caution when walking alone at night. They ask that anyone with information regarding these robberies, the offender or any campus crime to call UPD at 245-2890.
