CANYON LAKE – Texas State student will make a full recovery with no permanent damage after waking up from a four-day coma Sunday due to a 34 feet fall off a cliff-side trail.
Student Maggie Douglas, 18, of San Marcos, was running her semiweekly trail Thursday in Canyon Lake when she lost her footing and fell into rock-filled waters. To help with the healing process, she was placed in a medically induced coma and will make a full recovery.
“I was so scared,” Douglas said. “All I remember is falling and waking up in a hospital. I am just so thankful that someone saw me fall. I run all the time along that path and have never had a problem.”
A nearby fisherman, Randy Davis, 52, of Canyon Lake, saw the incident and called for help as he tried to rush out to her aid.
“She hit the water hard,” Davis said. “When I saw her fall, I immediately called 911. I tried to drive my boat over to her, but the water was extremely rough that day and those rocks don’t make it any easier.”
After being rescued by the Comal County EMS workers, Douglas was rushed to the Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels. Lead Surgeon Tom Henderson, 31, of New Braunfels, diagnosed her injuries as a broken arm, broken ribs, as well as numerous cuts and abrasions.
“…It was her head injury that troubled us the most,” Henderson said. “We placed her in a medically induced coma to allow the swelling on her brain to reduce. When we brought her out of his coma, we were shocked and excited to see that she had no apparent permanent damage.”
Medical staff said that luck was on Douglas’ side during the incident and wishes her luck on her future endeavors.
